Fitting And Not Sure For What

Actor Growth No Comments »

So I got booked for a fitting tomorrow which means I must be needed for something very specific. A fitting is basically just a day that you go on a production and the wardrobe simply checks you out to fully prepare you for the day of the actual shoot. Example, like in that Farewell Atlantis movie a lot of people needed military costumes with props and so the production needs to make sure everyone is good to go right on the day of shooting as it can take awhile.

The only strange thing is I have no idea what show or movie this is for as usually I would at least get some kind of notification of it beforehand. All I know is that it will take place at the Vancouver Film Studios.

Personality of A Performer

Actor Growth No Comments »

So I was watching American Idol recently and like everyone else I think one of the more entertaining aspects of the show is the auditions. While I have no intentions of being a singer personally, the show does remind me a lot about the film industry in general and what auditions can be like for an actor.

At the same time, what it made me think of too is all the people that appeared in the show that don’t really have good singing skills, such as that William Hung Guy way back, yet they tend to be successful still. That should make you think as an actor too. In the end it is just about entertaining people as oppose to being so uptight about showing that you are this great actor and your personality plays a huge role too.

Obviously we all want to try our best to portray believability, but remembering that it is all about connecting with your audience can sure change your perspective. If you are this real thick headed actor for example that thinks you are way above everyone else, people will likely be more critical of you and your performance. However, being genuine is something many people can relate to.

Thinking about it, do you think that William Hung guy would have gotten all that attention if he was a super arrogant person? I would think not.

So I got this e-mail today from a “talent scout” affiliated with an organization called Find My Audition (FMA). Here is the message:

Hi Alan, I came across your blog and noticed you’re interesting in acting, preforming, and networking with others in the entertainment industry.

My name is Rafael and am a talent scout for Find My Audition. We organize networking events where upcoming talents can meet and talk to industry insiders like Joe Franklin, Robert Russell, Tuffy Questell, and other on screen celebrities.

It is a great opportunity to learn from the masters, and gain insight on how the industry works.

Since you already have some experience, and are actively looking to network with others, I’d like to invite you to a one on one interview. Before the interview, we’ll do a pre-screening over the phone to learn more about your experiences. If accepted after the interview, you will be invited to attend our next event.

You can checkout the website to learn more at www.findmyaudition.com.

To register for the interview, go to www.findmyaudition.com and click on Sign Up Now.

Sorry, but for myself I can’t help but to have a huge red flag about offers like these. Even from reading this e-mail, it sounds like this is simply one of those “Attend this event” type of deal where you are promised to meet casting directors and all. While normally you do meet people with these types of businesses, there is probably a hefty fee attached to it too.

Glad you stopped by to check out my blog and my acting journey, but another thing that is weird is that if you are a reader you might notice that I am in the “Hollywood North” location at Vancouver, BC. Considering this company seems like they are in New York too, I don’t see how it would be ideal for me.

Virtual And Digital Auditions

Actor Growth No Comments »

I saw a posting today which was kind of interesting as for their audition process they requested actors to send a self taped audition. As well, they requested that the actors upload it to Youtube for consideration. This wasn’t for say a big Hollywood as it was just a independent production, but I thought this method sure raises a lot of questions.

Now there are many times where actors would simply create a self taped audition which is then sent to a casting director to review. This is usually for situations such as since I am in Vancouver. BC Canada, there could be a part in LA that a person thinks I would be great for. Therefore, instead of wasting time flying down to just audition they can pre-screen me this way.

Cost wise and efficiency I think it makes sense. In many ways it is like ditching the old paper headshots and submitting digital copies instead. My main concern would be quality though. Especially with film, the lighting can play a huge role in terms of what the person will look like on screen.

Literally, a person who is normally very good looking can look horrendous when the lighting isn’t proper. Now imagine an actor who doesn’t have the best equipment or know-how to create a good digital video. On top of that, usually the video quality degrades a little when uploading online to places like Youtube. Hence, you will look even worse if you don’t know what you are doing.

You may say it is about the talent, but many times it can be too distracting where you won’t take the person seriously. I guess that is something to think about as an actor where if you don’t already know so, it might be a good idea to get some technical skills if this is the way of the future. Unless you can afford to outsource all of your taping needs, then that would be different.
